So It Begins

Today is the first day of Carnival.  We could hear from our 3rd floor apartment that the streets were a lot busier than they were yesterday.  Around 10:30, we started to get our costumes together.  Who knew it took so long!  By the time I did some last minute repairs to Pedro's hat, my jacket and fan/bracelet; then, make-up (for me), the wig cap, the mouches (little black dots I glue on my face), lipstick for the guys (it was a bit of a tussle to get them to put it on), and then our costumes, at least an hour and a half had gone by!  I have to say that with all the work that went into getting ready for this, I am rather pleased with the results.

Now, when Faye and I talked about this back in Victoria, I really didn't believe her when she told me that the minute we stepped onto the street people would almost mob us for photos.  Colour me wrong!  When we stepped into Piazza San Marco, many people asked us if they could take our photo or have their photo taken with us.  It was a bit overwhelming and, I must say, I was more than a little chuffed.  Of course, we will never see the photos but it was good for our egos, to say the least.  We met up with Faye and Barry.  They looked amazing in their new steampunk costumes and clearly they are pros at posing for the photographers - amateurs and professionals.  To say that people clambered and scrambled to take their photos would be the understatement of Carnevale!
We stopped for lunch at the famous Café Florian on Piazza San Marco where, even in the restaurant, people wanted to take our photos.
We also saw lots of other fabulous costumes - although it was sometimes difficult to get photos because we were having ours taken.  However, here are a few and I am sure there will be lots more!  After all, we do have five more days of this - wow!
